We had a full house on Tuesday as we tackled our study of the human face. We warmed up with contour, blind contour and then built a map of general differences to look for when drawing a face. Then we drew and drew and drew with our illustrator heart. The repetition created discovery and discoveries fed our laughter. This is some special good stuff right here.
Oh, gosh! What a night! The Monday crowd had an informative visit from illustrator, @katebrennanhall for our gouache practice. It was so great. She shared tips and secrets of the medium, then told stories about her professional work. It was a hoot and the learning was big. This is such dang good stuff. Thanks, Kate!
The Drawing Club enjoyed an evening of awareness, burnishing and bugs. We learned that color is built, not just applied. Layering, pacing our pressure, paying attention, blending-all of it is part of our practice. Spending time in this space is learning, yes, but also very important quietness. Keep your pencils sharp, friends, this is the good stuff.
We are continuing our rainbow of gouache studies with the color orange and apricots as our subjects. We mix, we groan, we laugh, we sigh. Some long for our watercolor days, but on we go. Gouache is different for us now, and we are learning its real attributes. Give us a little time in this practice and we'll be amazing by the time violet comes around! This is the good stuff.
Tuesday was a return to color for the Drawing Club as we studied the tender structures of butterflies. We practiced building symmetry, transferring graphite, blending and breaking. So many tiny lessons. The one I forgot was - work smaller! Oh well, I have more quiet time ahead of me. This is the good stuff.
On Monday we introduced ourselves to the true nature of gouache using roses as our subjects. We practiced brush load, water management and layering. In the last series, we used it like watercolor, but this is a whole new ballgame. Gouache is magic! This is the good stuff.
