whirly & worldly

I’m doing this really messy, mind-blowing project for WORKUP. It all comes from hanging around with Betsy too much. I hear her talk, I get inspired by her passions and […]

Butterflies in the golden hour.
The Drawing Club looked at pointillism in new ways, new sizes and in different media. We drew keys from observation using a variety of tools, then created a landscape from reference that became our own. We practiced relaxing and changing our grip, defining line and creating density. This is the good stuff.
And we are back to red again with our gouache studies-this time, three tomatoes. We brought them all out... reds, pinks, oranges and siennas. Then we mixed to match what we observed. Layering is the magic, but layering is HARD and takes practice. We aren't afraid because we do. 😉 This is the good stuff.
We drew a crowd on Tuesday. Well, not a huge crowd, but we did learn how to see similarities and differences in the human form, then how use them to animate your drawings. We sketched and drew until we started to see our own style. We get smarter with every mark we make. This is the good stuff!
Oh, graphite! The Drawing Club took on the tedious job of building fur texture in a cat portrait. We started by creating the depth, value, shadows and highlights of millions of strands. (At least a million.) It was a lot of work, but without it, you cannot succeed. Practice is the point, after all. This is the good stuff, indeed.
We were a small contingent on Monday as we painted cityscapes in a violet hue. We treated our gouache as a wash, then built layers upon layers as we played with focus and diffusion. It was a relaxing practice and this is definitely the good stuff.
