If you pass by greenwater on any given day and observed the parkway space along Main Street, you might feel sorry for me. You might think that those weeds, stones […]

This beggar came knocking at my door today, looking for coffee. In the spirit of my dear grandmother, who fed hobos at her back door, I poured him some. He […]

I must make a confession. I saw this guy tippy-toeing out to meet his buddy on the ice of the Mill Pond today and I ran the other way. I didn’t […]

It is strange how this scene affected me. For some reason it brought me back to the late 60s and my early years of grade school. I remember the feelings I […]

I almost missed this shot–I couldn’t find my camera fast enough. I shouldn’t be in such a dither, though. I’ve witnessed this so many times that it is becoming ordinary. […]

This week, we worked on depicting clouds in a drawing. It is a lot more complicated than we assume, so we focused on building tones in the sky using different techniques. Then, we took the tone off again to form our clouds. Graphite on, graphite off, just like Mr Miyagi says. This is the good stuff, Danny.
This lesson, I was told, was very ambitious. We began by making charts and value scales of tints and shades. Some of us worked in watercolor, some in gouache. I worked in both in order to compare and contrast the way our brain has to work differently for each. Then we painted glass bottles-also ambitious. We were ready, and the work we shared was really, really fine. The good stuff was transparent this time!
My word for the year is "noticing," and this season is a perfect time to exercise it. Join me in noticing the things you pass by every day. Look a little closer. See a little deeper. Listen a little longer. 🤩 Carry on!
It has been a study in inks around here: learning the variety, the purpose, and how to set expectations. We warmed up for real, then got to work on our drawing form. Working in ink takes a different kind of courage, but if you practice your bravery, your work gets easier AND better. We're deep in the good stuff over here!
We continued our study of a vintage-inspired, muted palette with a look at birds. We tried a mopped daisy, practiced on one bird and got serious on another. By the end, we knew ourselves better and felt even more comfortable with our medium. Confidence takes awhile, but it is definitely the good stuff.
This was billed as a study of a coffee pot, but it was so much more. We worked in pen & ink, building midtones and shadows with lines of all kinds. Our warmup included value scales and a quick self portrait. Once we conquered all that, the coffee pot study was a breeze. This is the good stuff!
