Oh, illustration is hard, but it does allow our individual personalities to show! We looked at the interactive work of UK artist, Alexandra Ball (@miss_bally_ball) to inspire our practice. We used a giraffe and a bird as our subjects, then created an interaction. It was one of our most surprising reveals yet-we also saw a mouse and a dragon! This is such good stuff.
We continued our study in pen & and ink and added light washes to achieve a wider range of tone on a Trumpeter Swan. Depicting the details of a white bird requires patience and the slow work of building texture. We are focused on the good stuff.
This week, our painting practice was inspired by the graphic design and dimensional lettering work of Columbian artist, Saskia Bueno (@sasbu.letters). Check out her beautiful work! We practiced building our own letterforms, then added flowers, vines and other elements to our compositions. We are amazing at the good stuff.
This week, we continued our pen and ink practice by drawing dogs on a walk. We practiced managing values over a field, then built value scales to show ourselves how powerful we are with just line as our tool. I realized too late that my pen was still loaded with magenta ink. No matter the color, we are still working on the good stuff.
We're starting a new experience in drawing club-getting to know pen & ink. As any art medium, there is plenty to learn about the tools, the variations, and how to use each kind. We talked through it all, and then we set about drawing. It is hard to let go of our nerves, fear and expectations, but the quiet time spent drawing is where the good stuff is.
Monday found us practicing character development by starting simple. We used my old mantra, "Make ten, choose the best," as we made several different attempts at a character. Once we had introduced ourselves properly to our own fox, we painted her. This is scary at the starting line, but we are not afraid. This is the good stuff.
