In the summer of 2022, I began a community mural project with Woodland Centers, a mental health facility based in Willmar, MN. They wanted to animate a retaining wall and […]

A while back, when I was hanging with my idols (previous blog post), Mary Wohnoutka and Sandy Saulsbury, this is what we thought up: A huge fish mural on a […]

I am lucky because on any given day I could run into one of these gals at an event, a meeting or walking down the street. They are Mary and […]

pain in the neck

19January2014by k. 3 Comments

On Saturday I had an awful pulled muscle on the right side of my neck and shoulder. It was less likely an injury than a stress point from the tension […]

the silence says

2December2013by k. 5 Comments

One side of an old, abandoned spool has become my personal mandala. It is scrubby and rough, porous and broken. Altogether perfect, actually. I am using it in a meditative practice […]

this place is a mess

28January2013by k. 7 Comments

I am working on a project I absolutely love. It takes all my smarts — 2D & 3D; soft & hard; image & word. Love, love, love. It is part of […]

While working on a project in the studio these last few nights, I had a loud barking going on inside my head. Each letter I rendered on this project sent […]

O, the agony.

10November2012by k. 3 Comments

It is painful, this point at which I find myself. Nothing has a more evil, pointed stare than a blank canvas or page. I stare at it. It stares at me. […]

During our teenage years, my grandmother used to say, “there sure is a lotta lookin’ at your own belly buttons around here!” Of course, her point was that our self-involvement […]

Oh, illustration is hard, but it does allow our individual personalities to show! We looked at the interactive work of UK artist, Alexandra Ball (@miss_bally_ball) to inspire our practice. We used a giraffe and a bird as our subjects, then created an interaction. It was one of our most surprising reveals yet-we also saw a mouse and a dragon! This is such good stuff.
We continued our study in pen & and ink and added light washes to achieve a wider range of tone on a Trumpeter Swan. Depicting the details of a white bird requires patience and the slow work of building texture. We are focused on the good stuff.
This week, our painting practice was inspired by the graphic design and dimensional lettering work of Columbian artist, Saskia Bueno (@sasbu.letters). Check out her beautiful work! We practiced building our own letterforms, then added flowers, vines and other elements to our compositions. We are amazing at the good stuff.
This week, we continued our pen and ink practice by drawing dogs on a walk. We practiced managing values over a field, then built value scales to show ourselves how powerful we are with just line as our tool. I realized too late that my pen was still loaded with magenta ink. No matter the color, we are still working on the good stuff.
We're starting a new experience in drawing club-getting to know pen & ink. As any art medium, there is plenty to learn about the tools, the variations, and how to use each kind. We talked through it all, and then we set about drawing. It is hard to let go of our nerves, fear and expectations, but the quiet time spent drawing is where the good stuff is.
Monday found us practicing character development by starting simple. We used my old mantra, "Make ten, choose the best," as we made several different attempts at a character. Once we had introduced ourselves properly to our own fox, we painted her. This is scary at the starting line, but we are not afraid. This is the good stuff.
