hanging with my idols

5February2022by k. 1 Comment

I am lucky because on any given day I could run into one of these gals at an event, a meeting or walking down the street. They are Mary and […]

pain in the neck

19January2014by k. 3 Comments

On Saturday I had an awful pulled muscle on the right side of my neck and shoulder. It was less likely an injury than a stress point from the tension […]

the silence says

2December2013by k. 5 Comments

One side of an old, abandoned spool has become my personal mandala. It is scrubby and rough, porous and broken. Altogether perfect, actually. I am using it in a meditative practice […]

this place is a mess

28January2013by k. 7 Comments

I am working on a project I absolutely love. It takes all my smarts — 2D & 3D; soft & hard; image & word. Love, love, love. It is part of […]

barking has its benefits

26November2012by k. 6 Comments

While working on a project in the studio these last few nights, I had a loud barking going on inside my head. Each letter I rendered on this project sent […]

O, the agony.

10November2012by k. 3 Comments

It is painful, this point at which I find myself. Nothing has a more evil, pointed stare than a blank canvas or page. I stare at it. It stares at me. […]

I have the honor of creating another CD cover for my pals in the Green Lake Bluegrass Band. These fellas are a local favorite, leading lively worship services in the summer months at […]

During our teenage years, my grandmother used to say, “there sure is a lotta lookin’ at your own belly buttons around here!” Of course, her point was that our self-involvement […]

brainworms and muskrats

10July2012by k. 1 Comment

I confess I have had a brainworm lately. I have been positively obsessed with the process of painting the service bay floor. All other projects have been done to satisfaction, […]

Goodbye old electrical conduit stubs! Today, during the process of prepping the floor for paint, I had to (finally) lop off the remaining pipes that housed the electrical wiring under […]

Butterflies in the golden hour.
The Drawing Club looked at pointillism in new ways, new sizes and in different media. We drew keys from observation using a variety of tools, then created a landscape from reference that became our own. We practiced relaxing and changing our grip, defining line and creating density. This is the good stuff.
And we are back to red again with our gouache studies-this time, three tomatoes. We brought them all out... reds, pinks, oranges and siennas. Then we mixed to match what we observed. Layering is the magic, but layering is HARD and takes practice. We aren't afraid because we do. 😉 This is the good stuff.
We drew a crowd on Tuesday. Well, not a huge crowd, but we did learn how to see similarities and differences in the human form, then how use them to animate your drawings. We sketched and drew until we started to see our own style. We get smarter with every mark we make. This is the good stuff!
Oh, graphite! The Drawing Club took on the tedious job of building fur texture in a cat portrait. We started by creating the depth, value, shadows and highlights of millions of strands. (At least a million.) It was a lot of work, but without it, you cannot succeed. Practice is the point, after all. This is the good stuff, indeed.
We were a small contingent on Monday as we painted cityscapes in a violet hue. We treated our gouache as a wash, then built layers upon layers as we played with focus and diffusion. It was a relaxing practice and this is definitely the good stuff.
